Bird of the Week: The Wild Turkey
|
|
Found in North America
Hear Their Calls
If you don’t know much about Wild Turkeys besides how you can draw one with the outline of your hand, now’s your chance to learn more about this common creature. Turkeys are one of the largest birds in the United States and can be found roaming the forests year-round—except in Alaska. They forage along the ground in conspicuous, beauty-challenged packs looking for ground vegetation like berries and acorns as well as insects.
Their famous, giggle-inducing gobble is usually only heard during mating season when males call to attract females. When they do so they puff up their feathers, spread their tails, engorge their drooping face wattles, and strut around like they own the place.
Fun fact: America’s lust for Turkey meat meant their numbers had seriously dwindled by the 1940s, but people began to try to restore the populations by capturing wild birds and transporting them to other areas. It worked, and they are no longer a threatened population. (Bonus fun fact: Turkeys can swim!)

Now to their roosts wild turkeys stray,
And ambush'd hunters seek their prey.
This wandering, shy, secluded bird,
This roamer of the forest-ground,
Thro' all the Western wilderness,
In dense, embowering haunt is found.
— from the poem “Wild Turkey” by Isaac McLellan, Jr.
