The Barred Owl

We can’t help but romanticize the Barred Owl, with its huge, emotive eyes; silent, graceful flight; and mysterious nighttime call. If you’re lucky enough to hear their hooting in your area, you may be in for a birding treat, as they usually stay within a six-mile radius as long as they live — and they can live for up to 26 years.
Barred Owls can be found in the woods everywhere from coniferous forests in Canada to the swamps of Florida. The only other owl that tends to threaten Barred Owls are the slightly larger (and ear-tufted) Great Horned Owl, so they tend to avoid their territories. Meanwhile, Barred Owls hunt mostly at night, as well as dawn and dusk, for small mammals, fish, and some reptiles and insects.
Fun fact: The Barred Owl’s telltale hoots sound like, “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?”
