Bird of the Week: The Great Blue Heron
|
|
Found in North and Central America
Hear Their Song
A Great Blue Heron soaring silently through a dusky sky is always a majestic sight. They can be spotted slowly stepping with purpose on the edges of all kinds of fresh and salty waterways, diligently searching for fish, amphibians, and even rodents to spear with their deadly beaks.
While these birds with blue-gray feathers stand up to 4.5 feet tall and can have a wingspan of 6.5 feet, they’re surprisingly light, weighing only about six pounds (thanks to their hollow bones, which all birds share).
Fun fact: Great Blue Herons have excellent night vision, and can hunt 24/7.

So heavy
is the long-necked, long-bodied heron,
always it is a surprise
when her smoke-colored wings
open
and she turns
from the thick water,
from the black sticks
of the summer pond,
and slowly
rises into the air
and is gone.
