Peregrine Falcons are the Superman of birds—they can fly up to 70 mph when hunting, and dive bomb for prey at up to 200 mph! It’s known as the fastest animal on earth. These carnivores often hunt (in the air!) and eat other birds, from geese to gulls to sparrows. They will also pick off small mammals.

Their large stick nests are usually built high up on a cliff edge, or a bridge or other tall structure. They can mate for life as well as use the same nesting site for many years. Pesticides like DDT almost killed off this agile bird of prey in the ’90s, but conservation efforts have helped the species rebound—today, they can be found almost all over the world. 

Fun fact: These birds have been prized by humans as trained hunters for hundreds of years.
