Here’s some bird photography inspo to kick off your weekend! (via @gamanderlopez)
If you’ve ever watched a horror film set in an abandoned lakeside cabin, you’ve probably heard the call of the Common Loon. Their calls can sound a bit like a cross between a dramatic scream and a seagull’s bleat, but their best known sounds are the eerie, drawn-out wails often used as background noise in thrillers or nature flicks.
Common Loons have regal coloring during summer, with a black head and iridescent necklace, and white and black patterning along their bodies. These master fishers are excellent divers and catch and swallow their prey — which is usually small fish like minnows, but sometimes also mollusks and frogs — underwater. But they’re awkward on land and only come ashore to mate and nest. Babies can swim and dive within 2-3 days of birth!
