BIRD OF THE WEEK
The White-tailed Kite

📍 Found in California, Texas, and parts of South America

There aren’t many birds that can hover in the air like a helicopter or a UFO, but the White-Tailed Kite is one of them. This Hawk can be spotted on high leaning into the wind to float like a kite, its telltale white body with gray-tipped wings and black shoulders standing out in any weather.
If you’re hoping to see one, keep your eyes peeled near dawn when the White-Tailed Kite takes flight to scope out its prey of small rodents in the grasslands below. Watch it swoop down to snatch up a meal with its talons with impressive precision and speed.
Fun fact: White-tailed Kites roost in groups of 100 or more during the nonbreeding seasons; dusk is the prime viewing time to see them gathered.

A QUOTE
And then I hear
outside, over the actual waves, the small,
perfect voice of the loon. He is also awake,
and with his heavy head uplifted he calls out
to the fading moon, to the pink flush
swelling in the east that, soon,
will become the long, reasonable day.
