Bird of the Week: The Neotropic Cormorant
|
|
Found in Texas, Mexico, and Central and South America
Hear Their Song
If you’ve ever passed by a tree full of Neotropic Cormorants with their arms outstretched on a foggy night, you know how spooky they can be. Sometimes hundreds of them take to lakeside trees, or a rooftop, or floating buoys, and open their arms while standing perfectly still to dry their wings. But during the daytime they can usually be found swimming and fishing.
These agile birds with a bit of orange at the base of their beaks and S-shaped necks can dive deep underwater in search of small fish, frogs, or insects. They also make a grunt that some people have described as sounding like a pig or even the Grudge.
Fun fact: Cormorants are used as fishing partners by humans in many parts of the world. You may have seen this viral Tik Tok of a Chinese fisherman accompanied by Great Cormorants.

Is it the cormorants, whose black wings, one by one,
Cut the blue wave that o'er them breaks in liquid pearls?
Is it some hovering sprite with whistling scream that hurls
Down to the deep from yon old tower a loosened stone?
